Inside TraceMark™ Flow: How It Works and What Makes It Different
Most traditional traffic monitoring platforms require cities to build the infrastructure first before they can generate meaningful insights: installing sensors, deploying cameras and connecting hardware. TraceMark™ Flow doesn't. Much of the data already exists. The opportunity is to turn that data into actionable intelligence that traffic operators, transport planners and other decision-makers can use today.
How It Works
TraceMark™ Flow is built on Google Maps Roads Management Insights (RMI) and runs on Google Cloud. At a high level, three things happen:
1. Ingest. TraceMark™ Flow pulls in RMI's road data, both from periodic collections for long-term analysis and from near-real-time streams for event-level updates across the routes and corridors a city defines.
2. Process. That data is processed and stored at scale on Google Cloud infrastructure, combined with complex mapping, traffic, and environmental data to produce metrics that go beyond raw speed: expected time, actual time, and unusual traffic events, for every monitored road.
3. Deliver. Seamless integration with existing business systems via an API built on Google Cloud. Processed intelligence is available as a visualisation web dashboard for day-to-day operational use.
What This Looks Like Day to Day
Inside the dashboard, users move between three core views:
Congestion: a live, city-wide view of road performance, with unusual congestion flagged separately from routine congestion, so operators can immediately see what's abnormal versus what's simply rush hour.
Journeys: travel time, speed, and reliability data for specific study routes, with historical and live views side by side.
Reports: flexible reporting and analytics built for demonstrating impact over time, not just describing current conditions.
What Makes It Different
Because TraceMark™ Flow is built entirely on RMI and Google Cloud, there's no camera or sensor infrastructure to install or maintain. That's not just a cost-saving; it's the reason coverage can be citywide from day one rather than expanding corridor by corridor over years.
TraceMark™ Flow is built on Google Roads Management Insights (RMI), with NGIS working closely with Google on the platform's development and evolution. This close relationship means TraceMark™ Flow is deeply integrated with the underlying RMI capabilities, allowing us to translate the data and insights into a practical solution for transport teams.
Rather than requiring users to manually query dashboards and cross-reference reports, planners can ask TraceMark™ Flow’s Gen AI tool directly about road conditions and get immediate, contextual answers to inform corridor design and network resilience planning.
The data access API means TraceMark™ Flow can connect directly with the systems teams already rely on. Traffic intelligence can be integrated into operations centres and other enterprise platforms, bringing real-time road network insights directly into existing workflows.
TraceMark™ Flow is already operational across Europe, the Middle East, and Asia Pacific. This is infrastructure cities are running today, not a concept being tested.
The Result
Transport agencies gain a comprehensive, real-time view of their network without the significant capital investment traditionally required for traffic monitoring infrastructure. They can combine live and historical data to plan proactively, rather than simply react to changing conditions. And for city leadership, the platform provides a measurable way to demonstrate whether investments in smarter transport management are delivering tangible improvements.
